Maya Angelou has said when you know better you do better. I don’t agree. I don’t believe that people cheat on their spouses because they don’t know better. I don’t believe that people murder because they don’t know better. I don’t believe that people gossip and slander one another because they don’t know better. I don’t believe that people drink and drive because they don’t know better. I don’t believe that people are aborting children because they don’t know better. I don’t believe that people neglect their children while they entertain themselves and pursue their own lives because they don’t know better. I could just go on and on with so very many examples of knowing better and doing anyway. There is a time when you know right from wrong. That is what is called the age of accountability.

God gave us emotions and we need to learn how to handle them. We need to learn wisdom and take responsibility and that is life. God gave us guilt because our heart knows better than we give them credit for. When you do wrong, you know. Do it long enough and you won’t care anymore and will make excuses.

We do better when we WANT to do better. We obey the gospel when we want heaven more than earth. We submit to God when we want salvation more than anything. We do better when we want to do better. We all make mistakes but you learn from them and stop repeating them when we want to. It is not in the knowing it is in the wanting to know because your heart will tell you that you have hurt those you love, even when it is you.

We live in a world of education and knowledge. Jesus is not a secret. The Bible is the most sold book in existence with over 5 BILLION copies sold. Think about that. It is not a secret how to get to heaven. It is not a secret how to act with righteousness. This world knows better. It is time to do better. There is not going to be the excuse of ignorance to claim when judgment must come.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.” Romans 1:18-19  (NKJV).

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV).

Did God really create the earth, heavens, animals and us in just six days? Did Lot’s wife really turn into a pillar of salt? Did Jonah really get swallowed by a big fish? Is the bible believable? What about slavery, the treatment of women and is God just a big ole meanie?

I must say that Satan is working hard and has claimed so many. The debates that take place about the bible, the truth of God and the relevance of the bible is just amazing. You have so many atheists and haters of God arguing that God is mean and the bible is myth.

None of these current non-believers were there in the beginning when God was creating this world and they would benefit from reading Job. We do not know exactly how long those first six days were because we do not know how long a day was then. I know that the Bible speaks the truth and I know that God is the Creator and Father of us all. I believe that Lot’s wife did turn into a pillar of salt and that if there is not any understanding as to why and what lessons are provided in the telling of that story then it should be read again and again but I will say that disobedience and a longing for this world were a part of her character. I do believe that Jonah got swallowed by a big fish and I know that it was a foreshadowing of Jesus’ time in the ‘tomb’ which was when He descended into the lower parts of this earth to preach to those who slept.

I believe that slavery has been a part of humanity since the beginning of time and just because we believe ourselves ‘civilized’ does not mean that it does not still occur in this world or that it will not be seen again by those who believe that it is a thing of the past. There are instructions in the bible to honor women and to respect them just as there are instructions for the men to be respected as well but the one that deserves the most honor and the glory is God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

There will be naysayers and non-believers that will try to undermine your faith by preaching their philosophy of civilization and education but I know that the most civilized place with the most educated souls reside in heaven and it is the blessing of the believer to be permitted to enter those heavenly gates upon their death.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.” 2 Timothy 2:15-16 (NKJV).

We know the story; that Jesus suffered for us, that He died for us, that He was separated from God for us, that He was buried and that He rose again. We know that Jesus is our Savior and that the work was completed by Him as our propitiation. What can Jesus do for you now? There are many who pray for healing, for financial liberation, for love, happiness and so many things that should never come first in a person’s life. So, what can Jesus do for you, if you are willing to ask?

Jesus can deliver you from sin. You will say, He already did that by dying on the cross for us. No. Jesus died so that you are able to be forgiven, but that will not keep you from sinning in your life. Jesus will deliver you from your fleshly desires, will teach you obedience to God’s Commandments, will open the Scriptures for you and will give you knowledge. Jesus will teach you submission, take you from anger and hate to forgiveness and love. Jesus will guide you into compassion and hope, peace and simplicity. Jesus will help you to become willing to see this life as it should be seen, fleeting, a test, a joy and full of complications that can hinder your path to heaven. Jesus will heal your heart and your mind and teach you to look up to our true Father and Creator and to allow the things of this world to pass from your life. Jesus will help you to let go, to stop living in fear, to trust in the Lord. Jesus will come to you and love you.

You have to learn to pray for the right things, to desire the things of God and not the things of this world. You have to open your heart to desiring to spend the time it takes to truly get to know how God desires to be worshiped and you have to learn to listen to the truth that is given to you. Jesus will help you to grow in faith, to become a light to others and to overcome sin. It is not enough that He died for you, now you must learn to live for Him. It is not enough to believe in Him, now you must honor Him by dying to sin and denying yourself the passions of the flesh that will empty your soul and corrupt you. Jesus will be there for you, will strengthen you and if you are genuine in your gratefulness and genuine in your desire to belong to Him, He will not forsake you. Allow yourself to be willing to be convicted in what you must release and ask Jesus to deliver you from those burdens. Jesus is willing, are you?

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:10-11 (NKJV).

We are not alone, and we have never been alone, writes Pastor John Collins of Love That Cross Ministries and Pastor John Collins Ministries.  God is with us.  Jesus Christ is with us.  When you look at the birth of a child that wasn’t expected to survive, and that child not only survives, but survives healthily, that is a miracle, and that is the work of God.  Someone is unexplainably cured of a disease that would be a death sentence otherwise, that is a work of God.  When a person cries out in desperation, at the end of their proverbial rope, with nothing left inside them to give, yet instead of giving up, instead of becoming an addict or a victim, they stand strong and continue forward in faith which is strength in knowing Jesus.

“We are bombarded with temptations and are weak. It is easy to be swayed by what you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. We are creatures that love our pleasures. We are sometimes easily impressed. We are sometimes easily intimidated. We are sometimes easily blinded to the truth…. He who is poor is he who is humble. He who is contrite is he who knows that he is not without sin. He who trembles is he who is in awe of God.

We are in need of our Savior. We are bombarded with temptations and are weak. It is easy to be swayed by what you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. We are creatures that love our pleasures. We are sometimes easily impressed. We are sometimes easily intimidated. We are sometimes easily blinded to the truth.

We are in need of Jesus. We are in need of God. We are not alone and have never been alone. Sometimes we forget that this world is bigger than our realities. Sometimes we forget that there is more to life than what we can see and what we seek to control. We need to stop in our tracks and remember the Lord.

We are in need of our Savior. We have been given life everlasting by God in the form and sacrifice of His Son. We need to become humble people who are grateful for the gift. We need to become contrite people who know that we cannot save ourselves. We need to become people who know what is acceptable and good to God and know what we should be seeking forgiveness for. We need to acknowledge our natures and come to the Cross.

Faith is not futile. Faith is not useless. God is not absent nor is He uncaring. God is not imaginary. God is here in your hearts. God is wanting to be your God and to give you the gift of Jesus. God has provided a way for you and for me.

Do not ignore the call of God in your life. Do not let your days pass you by without the love of our Savior. Be proactive in your beliefs and trust that submission to God will indeed save your soul.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NKJV).

Peace is where we find contentment says Pastor John Collins of Love That Cross Ministries and Pastor John Collins Ministries.  Our fast-paced lives make it difficult for us to find peace, a minute alone, within ourselves, and finding peace is when we finally let the little things go and seek calm and the love of Jesus Christ Pastor John Collins elaborates.

Finding peace is difficult because we live in a society that demands our attention every minute we are awake, and sometimes even sleep is interrupted by the drama that happens around us, no matter how much we try to isolate ourselves.  Others may step in to disrupt our thoughts without giving any consideration to what we are doing: the impulsiveness and impatience and attention seeking of others distract us from finding the peace that as Christians, we know is there for the asking.  Violence and discouraging headline news invade our lives every day.  Pastor John Collins cites a statistic that there have been more children killed in schools than the armed forces in 2018, so far.  Peace seems to be so far off when we consider the events of the world around us.  Fear becomes more of the normal than the peace we can find within. 

“In order to be peaceful we must be able to claim peace within… I believe that we are not always aware of how much we need peace and of how far away it is from us. We let little things upset us and we let our stress levels get so high that we become agitated people who become sick in our bodies… Yet, peace is where hope lies. Peace is where love lies. People go on vacation to find peace. Many people go and spend time with nature to find peace. Many people close themselves off from the busy schedules they lead to find peace within themselves. It is a crowded world and it is a fast paced society that we live in so we have to make an effort to find peace within it.

We are told to be peaceful with others, to have compassion and kindness in our hearts so that we may walk a walk that is approved of by God. But how can we be peaceful with others and have compassion on others when our own lives are in upheaval? How can we be kind to others when we are not always kind to ourselves? How can we be calm when our natures are not?

In order to be peaceful we must be able to claim peace within. Sometimes we see older people that have come to a place in their lives where acceptance and wisdom have given them peace. Sometimes we imagine that we see peace in others when we don’t feel that ourselves. I believe that we are not always aware of how much we need peace and of how far away it is from us. We let little things upset us and we let our stress levels get so high that we become agitated people who become sick in our bodies.

Peace is a choice. Some people have learned to love drama and seek it or stir it up if it is not present. Drama has become a staple in so many people’s lives that they don’t know how to function without it. Yet, peace is where hope lies. Peace is where love lies. Peace is where you find contentment. We need to get to the place where arguments and frustration mixed with unhappiness is not what is most familiar to us. Peace is not something that we should seek once or twice a year when we go on vacation. Peace is allowing those things that really don’t have value to pass from our lives.

Peace is knowing that bitterness is without value. Peace is knowing that love is better than hate. Peace is letting forgiveness become a part of you. Peace is looking to Jesus and wanting to be His follower. Peace is allowing the pettiness of this world to pass you by as you cling to the Cross. Peace is allowing the Lord into your heart. Learn to live in peace because you want to.

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 (NKJV).

So many people believe that this world is the true hell, that we simply have to get through our day to day struggles, make it to the end of our lives, and heaven is guaranteed because we say we believe in Jesus.  Pastor John Collins of Love That Cross Ministries and Pastor John Collins Ministries reminds us that everything belongs to God, but God gave us this world, Earth, to live in, to love in, to experience life in it.  The joys and sorrows, pain and rejoicing that we feel here are all part of living.  Believing in something means to go all in, taking in the lessons that were taught by the original Teacher and making them part of our lives, not simply giving lip service and the shallow belief of occurrence but not of incorporating the action into our very hearts.  That is belief.

So, what are you fighting for? Is it just to get to heaven? That narrow focus can make a person crazy, burn out or just give up. If you cannot see that life has meaning, that you can enjoy life then it is easy to lose your way and fall off the path of the faithful. You have to take the time to live, to feel really alive and to acknowledge that your life is a blessing for all of the struggle. What makes you feel alive? Is it standing in the rain, walking on a beach, riding on a four-wheeler in your swimsuit in the middle of winter surrounded by snow, or maybe it’s a candlelight dinner with your most special someone followed by a dance? Whatever gives you pause and delights your soul is what you should take the time to do. It does not have to be often and it does not have to be so planned that the moment gets lost but you should be looking for those moments in your life that become the memories that you prize. You will take those with you because they belong to you forever.

In your day to day life you may feel run down and overwhelmed with the mundane. In your day to day life you may become discouraged. You need to allow yourself those special moments where you catch your breath and you even need to make the effort to recognize the moments that you have already had and seek out more. That is what you are fighting for in your faith. You see, heaven is full of joy and people who feel that intense awareness of love and hope and happiness every day. You will never truly seek to become a righteous person if you don’t believe in that promise and in order to truly believe in the promise you need to trust and believe in God. It is easy to believe in the truth of God when you can glimpse joy in its perfection in experiences in your life that touch your soul and become engraved on your heart. That is a blessing from God and you should never underestimate His greatness and your connection to Him.

“May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.  May you be blessed by the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 115:14-15 (NKJV).

The best day I ever spent was in continued prayer.  It left my spirit lighter, I felt like there was accomplishment in an otherwise lackluster kind of day, and it just felt plain good.  Prayer isn’t about asking for yourself, it is part of what Jesus taught to care about others….prayer for others is what we should be doing because we should do for others what we want done for us.  There simply isn’t enough prayer, and God does want to hear from us, from our heart.  It is a relationship that those who were found to be righteous in the eyes of God had:   Abraham, Job, Enoch, Elijah, Mary, Esther, Daniel, Moses and others….all of these individuals are recorded as having a full relationship with God through prayer that pleased God. 

Evil in this world is because of our free will, Pastor John Collins reminds us, just as Jesus taught during His ministry.  God gave us free will, as a good Father, He allows us to make our own choices in our lives.  He cares that much about us to allow us to choose instead of being robot-like creatures.  Evil is a product of individuals being selfish, self-serving, desiring power and recognition (Pastor John Collins, January, 2018).

“If God is so powerful, why does He allow bad things to happen? That is always a question for those who would deny that there is a God and would claim that if there was a God at all then He must not care about us and must not be all good as those who believe in His say. God gave men free will to live and choose to behave as they would have it and for that reason there will always be evil in this world. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” John 3:19-21 (NKJV).

There is true evil in this world. We can look around and see it. Many people would like to ignore it, not be bothered by it, not have it touch their lives and just go about their business. Sometimes evil intrudes and we are shocked, hurt and want to question if there is a God at all. If God is so powerful, why does He allow bad things to happen? That is always a question for those who would deny that there is a God and would claim that if there was a God at all then He must not care about us and must not be all good as those who believe in His say. God gave men free will to live and choose to behave as they would have it and for that reason there will always be evil in this world. Evil is just selfish desires and power grabs manifested in this world. Evil is those choosing to lash out at others because of their own hurt. Evil is defiance and rebellion acted out in order to lift oneself up. Evil is petty and there will come a time when God chooses to step in and bring about further revelation to this world.

Some wait for God to act and some want to ignore the signs but while there is still yet time we should be praying for more light to shine in the darkness. Prayer is a powerful thing and God wants to hear from us, not just about our lives, our desires, our sicknesses and needs, our family and friends but about our hopes and thoughts regarding this world. Do you consider praying about those who suffer, the abused men, women and children? Do you pray for the weak? Do you pray that those who protect us are themselves protected? Do you pray that righteousness would make its way into the government? Do you pray that foreign nations would be strengthened in food and health to limit the depletion of your own country? Do you pray that revelation would come from God that would minimize the desire to blow each other up? There are people whose only desire is for more power, more money, more weapons and the opportunity to display it all for the world to see. There is evil in this world because some only care about themselves and they don’t value life or the gifts that come with it.

What so many have forgotten, failed to realize or choose to ignore is that the only true power in this world comes from God alone and all of the rest is an illusion. God is the one who has all of the strength and He really does want us to make the best choices available to us and sometimes people just don’t know what that is. Changing things in this world can start with hope and prayer. Change does need to come, more light needs to permeate the dark and more people need to wake up to the reality that things are changing and we need to change as well. We need more righteousness in this world, not more rebellion. Pray for that.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (NKJV).

“Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?”  If we hear that phrase with a heavy New York accent and a hand gesture by the speaker pointing to himself, we chuckle.  The prophets of old told of tales of horror and pain, and the Hebrews looked at them blankly as if to ask “Are you talking to me?”  Sadly, we are in the same situation now, and it isn’t funny.  The commandments that God wrote for Moses and the Israelites have been padded with the lie that we don’t have to pay attention to them because Jesus replaced them.  Wrong.  Fear and trembling have been padded with shiny promises of wealth and fortune if we give enough money to a prosperity pastor.  Wrong. 

Pastor John Collins is passionately preaching and teaching that our will gets us in trouble, that God wants us to come back to Him and find Jesus again follow the will of God.  We don’t want to look in a mirror and examine why we keep on the blinders and keep doing what pleases us.  We need to let go, and let God and Jesus take over those reins and in pleasing them, we become more, we enjoy more, we are more…more than what we can create alone.

One of the most difficult truths for a believer in the truth of God and Jesus Christ to acknowledge is that most people don’t want to be bothered with the commandments of God, with the consequences of rebellion and disobedience or with what may be required of them in order to follow the will of God. Most people don’t want to have to examine their motives, their actions or their feelings about it all. Most people don’t want to hear of hell, judgment or their own peril. People like to live in the bubble of denial because it is comfortable and it allows them to go about their own selfish way.

Most people are fed up with religion and look out into the world and see the effects of what so-called faith has brought about. The deaths and wars, the judgment and exclusion and the riches for the wrong and the poverty for the right. Most people want to move past the need for religion that many see as just an opiate for the masses. Underlying the superficial of religion lies the truth of God and He has commandments that most find antiquated and obsolete. Most people find comfort in the niceties of religion that coat us all in bright and shiny hope but they don’t want to look into the mirror and face the possibility of the need to overhaul their souls. There has always been a passionate determination to avoid the judgment of God by living in the moment and choosing to believe that all is well in your world and somehow, someway God will find a way to fulfill all of the desires of your heart because He wants you to be happy.

Is the truth all doom and gloom? Is the reality all bad and not any good? Is there no hope for joy and pleasure in this life? Is there only burning judgment to look forward to? No. There is love and hope in this life and joy beyond measure but if you allow yourself to live in a bubble of denial and refuse to acknowledge the commandments of God and follow your own will and the pretty promises of others without examining your own heart and making changes according to the standards of God and His requirements for receiving the promises that He has made then you are living in delusion and will find disappointment for your soul when it is too late to do anything about it. If you don’t make it to heaven, you have failed. If you don’t teach your children how to get to heaven and give them a righteous example to follow, you have failed. Be willing to hear the warning and be willing to heed it.

“To whom shall I speak and give warning, That they may hear? Indeed their ear is uncircumcised, And they cannot give heed. Behold, the word of the Lord is a reproach to them; They have no delight in it.” Jeremiah 6:10 (NKJV).

Being Christian doesn’t mean you go to church Sundays or Wednesdays, then go home and keep on acting like you did before, says Pastor John Collins.  Just because you go into a church doesn’t make you Christian, just because you go into the garage doesn’t make you a mechanic.  You have to walk the walk, take the time to stop and reflect upon what you are doing, and honestly ask yourself if what you are doing is pleasing to God.  Use those Ten Commandments and honestly answer have you broken them?  Paul said we all fall short of the glory of God, we all are sinners, and we all need the salvation that Jesus has offered us, every day, for the rest of our lives. It truly is a race to run, using the analogies of Paul the Apostle.  The only way to get through this life with true joy is to find hope in Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness, seek His help and ask His guidance every day, every minute-Pastor John Collins, April 2018.
